Dribbling - Outside of Foot

Coaching Points

  • Lock ankle, point toe down and turn foot slightly inwards, touching the ball with foot between little toe, and the outside of the laces on your boot
  • Practice with both feet and keep the ball close
  • Touches should be light, close enough so away from defender, but far enough away from body to run freely, especially when accelerating
  • Stay on toes and head up, yet keeping the ball at the bottom of your peripheral vision
  • Turn hips with the ball, so both are traveling in the same direction

U9-U13

  • Keep ball close.
  • Outside of the foot.
  • On toes, body weight leaning forward.
  • Right foot Outside Outside – Left foot Outside, Outside.
  • Looking up so we know where we are going.
  • At final cone 3 outside of foot touches to face cones again.
  • Then repeat previous technique.

U14-U19

  • Keep ball close.
  • Small touches.
  • On toes, body weight leaning forward.
  • Only outside of foot, to go in and out of cones.
  • Looking up so we know where we are going.
  • Rotate feet after 2/3 touches.
  • At final cone outside of foot touches all the way round.

Progression Ideas

  • Increase the speed of the dribble, this will come with practice
  • Use both feet, if started on dominant foot only
  • Increase the number of cones and decrease the distance between the cones
  • Use two cones, (similar distance to cones 1 & 3 in the video) and work in a figure of 8, allowing for speed while using both feet.
  • Finish with a controlled pass or shot
  • Work against a friend and or set a time to complete the drill
